Fusion Friday!!

I am so excited to be introducing Fusion Friday to 8E this year.

We will be dedicating 80 minutes every Friday for Fusion Friday or Genius Project work.

Genius Projects will be tightly linked with objectives outlined by Alberta Education in their document:

Framework for Student Learning.

http://education.alberta.ca/teachers/aisi/themes/21-century.aspx

Specifically the Genius Projects will integrate objectives from English Language Arts, Religion, The Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science. Furthermore students will develop life skills such as planning, collaboration, communication, meeting timelines and following through on commitments. We have seen how these experiences inspire self-direction, pride and responsibility in each student. We have identified the following goals for the participation in this project:

#1 Demonstrate critical and creative thinking skills

#2 Develop respect for the student’s ability to accomplish tasks and achieve goals

#3 Demonstrate clear communication and organization skills and apply concepts

#4 Observe and collaborate with peers and adults

Students are encouraged to plan Genius Projects at school, however some students may want to complete projects that require extra work at home. Students may also need your help purchasing materials required for their projects. It will be up to parents and students to decide if they want to undertake projects that require extra materials/time at home.

A requirement is that they always have work to do at school during assigned work periods. Some basic materials (paper, paint, tape, some science equipment or art supplies) will be available through the school.

I look forward to sharing in your child’s creativity and success,

Special thank you to Mrs. Lothian and Mrs. Greeno for the outline of this letter.

Genius Hour

Show students video www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=829279

Gallery Walk of ideas (around class)

Use sticky notes – given to students, move around the classroom posting ideas under these headings.

Things I would like to:

Learn about (history, place, environmental issues, and social issues) Learn to do (skills – computer, instruments)

Learn to make (food, structural, motorized) Learn to create (art, story)

Learn to test (science experiment/theory)

Learn to change (environmental, social justice projects)

After we brainstorm all the possibilities, we will review with students and create criteria for Genius Hour. I will ask students to think about how realistic it is to do their project. What materials will be required is help needed, time required, specialists required?

My Genius Hour Project

My project will be:

I am going to: Learn About Learn to Do Learn to Make Learn to Create Learn to Test Learn to Change Other?

I CAN statements that my project will focus on:

1.

2.

3.

What do I already know about this topic?

This project is a good project because:

My final product will be:

I could use an adult mentor to help guide and inspire me. Do I know someone who would be able to offer their skills and expertise on a volunteer basis?

Evaluation:

I will work with my class and with my teachers to co-create criteria for evaluating individual projects and presentations.
